The Gregorian calendar matches the solar year and is used around the world. But it has problems.
Most businesses and govenments issue reports every three months. But the first quarter of the year
(the months January, February, and March) has 90 or 91 days, the second quarter has 91 days, and the
final two quarters have 92. The different lengths can make it hard to compare reports from one
quarter to the next. Another sore point is that dates don't match the same day of the week from one
year to the next. If the Fourth of July is on a Monday this year, next year it will be on Tuesday-
unless it's a leap year, in which case it will be on Wednesday!
Many people have offered new calendars that avoid these problems. The most well known was the World
Calendar, created in 1834 by Marco Mastrofini. Each quarter has 91 days, with a month of 31 days
being followed by two months of 30 days. Since 7 divides evenly into 91, each date would always
fall on the same day of the week. Four quarters of 91 days adds up to only 345. World Day would come
between December 30 and January 1. Leap Day would come after June 30 every fourth year. These
holidays would not be associated with Monday, Tuesday, or any other day.
The World Calendar makes sense but probably won't replace the Gregorian calendar we've used for the
past 400 years. How many airplane schedules, school records, appointment books, and millons of other
documents would have to be changed?
Do you want to be in charge of that?
