Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is a good example of the saying "You are what you eat". The
Chinese have long believed that food is medicine, and medicine is food.
TCM holds that one of the keys to staying healthy is to keep the balance in our bodies, and that
food plays a big part in keeping such a balance. The balance has much to do with the food's nature.
In TCM, the food's nature is described as cold, cool, neutral, warm and hot, just like temperature
types. But the food's nature is not actually about temperatures; it is about the effect of the food
on a person's body. For example, when we eat foods with a cool nature, we are adding a cooling
effect to our bodies, and eating warm foods will add a warming effect to our bodies. In everyday
life, we eat different foods to keep the balance in our bodies.
However, one person's food choice may not work for others' bodies bacause everyone has a different
body condition. If you are already a very dry person and you have so much heat in your body, the
more hot food you eat, the drier you will be. So, it is important to know our body conditions and
find out what food is best for us.
Eating the right foods and keeping the balance in our bodies is very important all the time. If we
can make it, we are able to live a healthy life.
